Driving down the road two days ago my Charging System Light came on, when we pulled into a parking lot a few miles later and turned the van off the van would not start back up, all of the gadgets and radio still worked, however, the van would not try to turn over. We jumped the van and the airbag light, the traction control light and the charging system light all came on as well as the ABS light started flashing at me.
I pulled the battery, checked it, then replaced it when it tested as bad. Put the new battery in, drove 30 miles down the road to attempt to make it back home and the charging system light came back on. Made it all the way home, turned the van off and let it set for a couple of hours. When we tried to start the van back up, it turned over but all of the lights again came on.
What could be causing the problem for the charging system light to be coming on and all of the other lights as well?
Thanks for your response, however, if the alternator has been tested passed the test, how could it still be bad? Not questioning your answer, just not sure how i could have gotten a false positive.
Alternator will charge until a bad voltage regulator, that is biult in to it,get,s hot then no charge, yes, parts stores, run it for short period and say it,s good, but not long enuuf to know that it is really bad. Chrysler Town and Country: Battery Light On – Diagnosis
I'm having the same problem changed alternator new battery post connector and still have battery light on.The protection system includes warning lights on the dash that illuminate when there is the engine malfunctions or there is a problem with other vital components.
You should remedy the problem before resetting the warning light. Otherwise, the malfunction will still exist and the warning light will eventually come back on. You can employ a couple of methods to reset the warning light. Park the vehicle on a level surface and shut the engine off. Walk to the rear of the van and ensure that the gas cap is properly tightened.
A loose gas cap can cause a malfunction light to stay on. Sit in the driver's seat, turn the ignition key to the "Accessory" position for about ten seconds and then turn it off. Do this three times. Crank the engine on the fourth turn of the ignition key. If the light does not go out after one to two minutes, shut the engine off and open the hood. Raise the hood and prop it in place with the hood rod. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the negative battery post on the battery with a small ratchet and a socket.
The negative post on the battery has a - symbol stamped beside it. Leave the battery disconnected for about 30 minutes. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post and tighten the cable down tight with the ratchet and socket. Removing the negative battery cable should have caused the vehicle's protection system to lose its memory and reset the light.
Crank the engine and inspect the light to see if it remains on. If the light goes out, turn the engine off. If the light remains on, let the engine run for about two more minutes.
If the light stays on, take the van to a repair shop to have the malfunction diagnosed and the light reset with an electronic scan tool. The malfunction must be resolved before the malfunction light can be properly reset. Warning Remove only the negative cable from the battery when resetting the malfunction light. The battery stores enough voltage to be able to start the engine without the assistance of an alternator. It is turned by a serpentine belt. Most of the time, when replacing an alternator, the alternator itself is relatively affordable. Here are the most common symptoms of a bad alternator in a Chrysler Town and Country:. The battery light is designed to tell you that there is not enough voltage to properly charge the battery, or that the battery itself is not holding the proper voltage.
In rare occasions the service engine soon light may light up. Outside of the battery warning light, a dead battery is the most common symptom of a bad alternator. As the alternator can no longer supply your Town and Country with an adequate power supply, it will begin to feed off of the reserve in the battery. Once this battery reserve hits a certain level, the vehicle will begin to run erratically and will no longer start when the key is turned.
Often, the battery light will come on, the alternator gets replaced, and then a few days later the vehicle dies. Nearly any auto parts store will test your battery for free to see if it holds a charge. As the ignition system is no longer able to produce a full powered spark, the engine will begin to sputter and stall.
If you find yourself in a position where you suspect that your voltage is dropping, but you need to safely get off the highway, turn off everything that you possibly can. That will allow all of the limited voltage in the battery to go to the ignition system. Dimming headlights are one of the most common signs of a bad alternator in the Chrysler Town and Country. As your Town and Country begins to eat through the voltage stored in the battery, the headlights will begin to fade.
Many accessories in a vehicle require quite a bit of voltage. Heated seats, the blower motor, power windows, and even the radio will work erratically or not work at all when the alternator is bad. Some alternators go bad right away, and some slowly lose their ability to charge under heavy loads.
The ones that fail completely are easy to diagnose. The battery drains and you are stuck with a vehicle that goes nowhere. The challenge is diagnosing an alternator that is just not quite charging like it needs to be. You can easily diagnose it with almost any multimeter. They should get brighter after the engine starts, since the voltage is increasing by almost 2 volts.
Now with the engine idling, rev it up a little bit. Did the headlights get brighter as you increase the RPM? This is a very strong indication that the alternator has in fact gone bad.
This test depends a lot on you to notice very subtle differences in lighting. It should not be used in substitute for checking the voltage as described directly above. Over the life of any vehicle, the alternator is going to go bad. Good luck diagnosing the alternator in your Town and Country. Error codes are used to diagnose problems with the Chrysler. You can reset error codes using an OBD scan tool. This small computerized device can be bought online or from any auto parts retailer. Make sure you reset the computer only after you have finished repairing or servicing the car or you may risk damaging the computer. Locate the OBD port, which is the same size and shape as the scan tool's connective end; the port can be found on the underside of the driver's-side dash next to the steering column.
Plug the scan tool into the port. Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, taking care not to start the engine. This will power on most scan tools; if it doesn't, locate the on-off switch on the tool and turn it on. Wait for the scan tool to retrieve the codes. Locate the "Delete Codes" or "Erase Codes" command and select it. Wait for the tool to erase all codes. Unplug the scan tool and start the engine.

Your battery light coming on may mean a few things such as a weak battery, a failing alternator, or a failing voltage regulator. This may be a sign of a failing voltage regulator or failing alternator. As you may know, the alternator is responsible for charging the battery while the engine runs by generating amperage and recharging the battery while the engine turns the alternator.
The voltage regulator is a unit that regulates the charging of the battery by the alternator. Often, this will result in the alternator allowing too much power to be delivered to the battery, damaging wires and prematurely destroying the battery. In other cases, it may result in the alternator not supplying enough power to the battery, undercharging the battery or not charging it at all.
